Holi, Neem and the Spring Cleanse
The bitter leaves and kanji of Holi line up almost perfectly with what the body needs as winter kapha begins to liquefy.
Holi marks the cusp of spring, when accumulated winter kapha begins to liquefy and seasonal allergies and skin troubles appear. Traditional households respond with bitter neem leaves, kanji (a fermented mustard-seed drink), and lighter cooking.
The bonfire and the colours are the visible festival. The food and fasting around it are the quiet preventive medicine.
