Cumin Buttermilk

Thin, cool buttermilk seasoned with roasted cumin powder and a pinch of salt.

Overview

Fresh curd is whisked with cold water into thin buttermilk, then seasoned with roasted cumin powder, a pinch of salt and sometimes coriander leaf. Taken cool with or after lunch, especially in hot weather.

A cooling everyday drink taken with meals in warm weather.

Make it fresh and keep it chilled; buttermilk spoils quickly in heat. Skip the salt if you have high blood pressure or fluid retention.

  • People on salt-restricted diets
  • People with a cold or heavy congestion who find dairy worsens it

Medicine interactions

  • Blood-pressure medicines, because of the added salt

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Generally customary in pregnancy; use pasteurised dairy and keep it freshly made.

Children: Serve unsalted or very lightly salted and well diluted for children over 2.

Stop and seek medical care if
