A traditional bedtime practice. Warm sesame oil is massaged into the soles, heels and ankles for a few minutes, then socks are worn or the feet wiped clean before getting into bed.

Safety essentials
If you have diabetes or any loss of sensation in your feet, check your feet daily and ask your doctor before oil massage. Slippery floors are a fall risk.
Who should avoid it
- People with diabetic foot problems or reduced sensation, unless advised by their doctor
- People with foot ulcers, wounds or fungal infection
- Anyone allergic to sesame
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Gentle foot massage is often welcomed in pregnancy; avoid strong pressure and check with your midwife.
Children: A light foot rub with plain oil is fine for children with supervision.
Stop and seek medical care if
- Numbness or tingling that does not go away
- A wound on the foot that will not heal
- Foot pain with swelling and redness
- Cold, pale or blue toes
