Warm Cumin & Cardamom Milk

Milk warmed with a pinch of cumin and cardamom, taken before bed.

Overview

A cup of milk is warmed with a small pinch of cumin powder and crushed cardamom, then sipped slowly about half an hour before bed as part of a wind-down routine.

Safety essentials

A comforting routine, not a sleep treatment. Ongoing insomnia, or sleep broken by breathing pauses, should be discussed with a doctor.

Who should avoid it

  • People with lactose intolerance or dairy allergy
  • People with gallstones, for whom cardamom may aggravate symptoms

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Generally customary in pregnancy in ordinary amounts.

Children: Use a smaller cup and only a tiny pinch of spice for children over 3.

Stop and seek medical care if

  • Sleep problems lasting more than a month
  • Waking gasping for breath
  • Loud snoring with daytime sleepiness
  • Low mood that persists
