Overview
A classical Ayurvedic head massage. A tablespoon of brahmi oil is warmed to body temperature and worked into the scalp and temples with slow circular strokes for about five minutes, then left for an hour before washing out.

Safety essentials
External use only — this oil is not taken internally and is not a treatment for any nervous system, memory, mood or sleep condition. Patch-test on the inner forearm 24 hours before first use, and do not apply to irritated, broken, sunburnt or infected scalp skin. A sudden, severe or unusual headache, or one with fever, a stiff neck, confusion or weakness, is a medical emergency — do not treat it at home.
Who should avoid it
- People with a scalp infection, wound, irritated skin or recent head injury
- Anyone allergic to brahmi, sesame or the carrier oil
- Infants and young children
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: External scalp massage is generally customary in pregnancy; do not take brahmi internally in pregnancy or while breastfeeding without medical advice.
Children: Use a very light touch and a small amount of plain oil for children instead.
Stop and seek medical care if
- Sudden severe headache
- Headache with fever and a stiff neck
- Headache after a head injury
- Vision changes or weakness on one side
