Steam Inhalation with Ajwain

Steam breathed from hot water in which carom seeds have been added.

Also known as: Ajwain steam, Carom seed steam

Overview

A teaspoon of ajwain is added to a bowl of freshly boiled water. The face is held at a safe distance from the bowl and the steam breathed for five to ten minutes with a towel over the head.

Temporary relief of a blocked nose during a mild cold.

Minimum age: 144 months.

Safety essentials

Hot water causes serious scalds. Place the bowl on a stable surface, never on a lap, and keep children away. Stop at once if breathing feels tighter.

Who should avoid it

  • Young children, because of the scald risk
  • People with asthma triggered by steam or strong aromas
  • People with facial burns or fragile skin

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Plain or mild steam is generally customary in pregnancy; keep the water at a safe distance.

Children: Do not let children lean over hot water. Scalds from steam bowls are a common household injury.

Stop and seek medical care if

  • Wheezing or breathlessness
  • Chest pain
  • High fever
  • Coughing up blood
