Ginger & Honey Sip

Freshly grated ginger juice stirred into a spoon of honey.

Overview

A small amount of freshly grated ginger is pressed for juice and mixed with a teaspoon of honey, taken slowly one to two times a day when the throat feels rough.

A soothing sip for a scratchy throat or a tickly cough.

Minimum age: 12 months.

Safety essentials

Honey must never be given to a child under one year old. This soothes a mild throat only and is not a treatment for a chest infection.

Who should avoid it

  • Infants under 1 year
  • People with bleeding disorders
  • People with severe acid reflux
  • Anyone allergic to bee products

Medicine interactions

  • Blood-thinning medicines
  • Diabetes medicines

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Small culinary amounts of ginger are customary; avoid large or concentrated doses in pregnancy.

Children: Never give honey to a baby under 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism.

Stop and seek medical care if

  • Difficulty breathing
  • High fever lasting more than 3 days
  • Cough lasting more than 3 weeks
  • Coughing up blood
