Overview

Peeled and deseeded ash gourd is blended and strained, and a small glass of the fresh juice is taken on an empty stomach in the morning. It must be made fresh each time.

Safety essentials

Never drink gourd juice that tastes bitter — bitter gourds of this family contain toxins that have caused serious poisoning. Discard it at once and do not taste again.

Who should avoid it

  • People with low blood pressure
  • People with kidney disease unless advised
  • Anyone allergic to gourds
  • People who find the taste causes nausea

  • Blood-pressure medicines
  • Diuretics

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Ask your doctor before taking pressed juices regularly in pregnancy.

Children: Not recommended for young children.

Stop and seek medical care if

  • Bitter-tasting gourd, which must be discarded immediately
  • Vomiting or severe abdominal pain
  • Chest pain or pain spreading to the arm or jaw
  • Black stools
