Hair Care

Oils, masks, and rinses for shine, scalp health, and strength.

The Indian hair-care tradition is built on warm oil massages, weekly masks, and herbal rinses. Choose ingredients based on whether your scalp is oily, dry, or flaky.

Patch test first. Always do a 24-hour patch test on the inner forearm before applying anything new to the face, scalp, or sensitive skin.

Coconut Oil

Penetrates the hair shaft to reduce protein loss; softens dry ends.

How to use

Warm 2–3 tbsp; massage into scalp and lengths. Leave 30 minutes (or overnight) and shampoo out.

Who should avoid

Very fine or low-porosity hair may feel weighed down — use sparingly.

Hibiscus (Gudhal)

Strengthens roots; traditionally used to slow hair fall and premature greying.

How to use

Blend 4–5 fresh petals with 2 tbsp curd; apply to scalp for 30 minutes, then wash.

Who should avoid

Pregnancy in large amounts (internal use).

Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

Rich in vitamin C; supports scalp health and natural shine.

How to use

Massage amla oil into the scalp once a week, or rinse hair with cooled amla-water (1 tsp powder in 1 cup water).

Who should avoid

Very dry scalps (can be slightly cooling) — pair with coconut oil.

Fenugreek Seeds (Methi)

Soothes itchy, flaky scalp; supports thickness and shine.

How to use

Soak 2 tbsp seeds overnight, blend into a paste with water, apply for 30 minutes, rinse.

Who should avoid

Anyone on blood-sugar or blood-thinning medication (only relevant if eaten).

Curd / Yogurt

Conditions the scalp and adds softness; helps with mild dandruff.

How to use

Apply 3–4 tbsp plain curd to the scalp and lengths for 30 minutes, then shampoo.

Who should avoid

Anyone allergic to dairy.

Rice Water

Smooths the cuticle; leaves hair shiny and easier to detangle.

How to use

Soak ½ cup rice in 2 cups water for 30 minutes, strain. After shampoo, pour over hair, wait 2 minutes, rinse with cool water.

Who should avoid

Fermented rice water on broken or irritated scalp.

Neem

Helps with dandruff, itch, and scalp build-up.

How to use

Boil a handful of neem leaves in 2 cups water, cool, strain, and use as a final scalp rinse weekly.

Who should avoid

Very dry scalps — follow with a light oil massage.

Aloe Vera

Soothes itchy scalp and adds light moisture without weighing hair down.

How to use

Mix 2 tbsp fresh aloe gel with 1 tsp coconut oil; massage in, leave 30 minutes, wash.

Who should avoid

Latex sensitivity — rinse the yellow sap from the leaf first.
